- The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, being the first transportation system that had been able to move between the eastern seaboard and the western interior with portage, had signified an impressive development for transportation in the nation. With the use of the canal, transportation costs of many good had been severely reduced.
- The Tariff of 1828, often labeled the Tariff of Abominations due to its effects on the antebellum Southern economy, had worked to protect Northern industries by placing a tax on imported goods. This tax was used a preventive measure for the mass importation of lower-priced goods and allowed for the growth of American industry because of it. The South had issues with this tax as they had to pay a rather substantial tax on imported goods -- goods which they had not been producing themselves. This dispute over the tax led to the Nullification Crisis of 1832.
