- Andrew Johnson was the seventeenth President of the nation with no Vice President for his only term.
- Term as President lasted from 1865 to 1869.
- Johnson became President following Lincoln's assassination.
- Served as the Governor of Tennessee.
Major "Events" of his Presidency:
- Johnson issues two proclamations which include his recommendations for restoring the Confederate states to the Union.
- Mississippi passes a "Black Code," which encourages other Southern states to pass their own versions in an effort to have the freedmen remain in an inferior position.
- Organization of the Ku Klux Klan in Pulaski, Tennessee.
- Johnson vetoes a bill calling for the extension of the Freedmen's Bureau (a bill that hoped to work against the Black Codes).
- Nebraska joins the Union.
- Johnson vetoes the Civil Rights Act (a second attempt by Congress to provide freedmen with federal citizenship)
- Signing of the Fourteenth Amendment
- The First Reconstruction Act is signed, but the second and third installation of these bills are vetoed.
- The House of Representatives successfully votes to impeach Johnson from office
