- Cleveland served as the Sheriff of Erie County, the Mayor of Buffalo, and as the Governor of New York.

- The Panic of 1893, a serious economic depression that was marked by the overbuilding and shaky financing of railroads (resulting in a series of bank failures), takes place.
- The Congressional repealing of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act.
- The signing of the Wilson-Gorman Tariff which slightly reduced the United States tariff rates from the numbers set in the 1890 McKinley tariff and imposed a 2% income tax.
- The Army of the Commonweal in Christ, or Coxey's Army, marches into Washington D.C..
- The Pullman Strike, a nationwide railroad strike where workers halted any handling of Pullman Cars, took place.
